But young Davey heard from his foster-mother vague tales of his true inheritance, and from a child he grew up with an obsessive determination to find his father and his rightful place in society. To this end, and that he might not be made a bricklayer, at the age of thirteen he ran away from the squalid Cutluck household." - from the dj.

4 RYBOT, Doris, (pseudonym) PONSONBY, D.A. Romany Sister
Robert Hale Limited 1960 Y Hardcover VG Y
(1960). Pp (6),7-188. 8vo, maroon cloth.

"In this unusual first novel, Doris Rybot tells the story of Anna Cooper, who leaves the gypsy wagons of her birth to seek across the world the younger sister she has never seen. Their mother, of a good family, had married a handsome gypsy, and then, tiring of him, had run away before her last child was born. This is not only the story of Anna's search but it unravels the life of her mother and her lover. Ann, too, has her own problems. She has to adjust herself to the ways of 'house-people,' and to learn in bitterness of the often impassable barrier between 'travelling people' and the rest of the world. The story ranges through Dorset, London, Hong Kong, Canton and Peking. An exciting, out-of-the-ordinary book." - from the dj.

The phrase "first novel" used by the publisher above is more than a little misleading as Doris Almon (D.A.) Ponsonby (March 23, 1907-1993) had been having novels published from at least the 1940s.

The rear dustjacket panel of Ponsonby's The Foolish Marriage has a photo of her by her caravan & horse and in the note beneath we find these, as it were, research credentials "Gipsies frequently call in and have commented with great approval on the details of [her] caravan."

A few spots to edges, ow vg in ightly soiled dj with tears. Signed inscription by the author ["Doris, who wrote it!"] to her uncle and aunt (W.B. and Mollie Almon), dated 3rd February 1960.

5 PONSONBY, D.A. Strangers in My House.
Hutchinson & Co.. (Publishers) Ltd. 1948 Y Hardcover VG N
No date. [1948]. Pp (8),9-256. 8vo, turquoise cloth.

An early Ponsonby novel.

"Miss Ponsonby, who is descended on her mother's side from a Loyalist family, brings to the writing of this vivid and exciting story of the American War of Independence, exceptional knowledge of the period, and a particular personal sympathy and understanding. [...] It is the story of family adventures and complications set against the background of a bitter war. While there are many interesting characters in the book, all extrememly well portrayed, the main story is concerned with two: Avon Giles, an adventurous Englishman (sentenced to transportation to America for a somewhat petty crime), and Laleah Fennel. They elope and are married, but there is swift disillusion, embitterment and separation. The rest of the story is played out in war-time New York, the prisoner-of-war camp at Charlottesville, and in Halifax, Canada, where Laleah's family finally settle. There, her own problem with Avon is resolved, and the book ends, as it begins, in Bath.". - from the dj."
